Harms of E-cigarettes and Youth

Smoking is down among young people in North Dakota. That’s good news. But cigarette companies aren’t giving up. They’re creating new products like e-cigarettes to hook a new generation and get the replacement customers they need. Unfortunately for our kids, their tactics are working.

Current e-cigarette use among middle and high school students tripled from 2013 to 2014. Findings from the 2014 National Youth Tobacco Survey show that current e-cigarette use among high school students increased from 4.5 percent in 2013 to 13.4 percent in 2014. Among middle school students, current e-cigarette use has more than tripled from 1.1 percent in 2013 to 3.9 percent in 2014.

E-cigarettes are often packaged and flavored like candy, creating a poison hazard for younger children. Reported liquid nicotine poisonings have increased significantly from one per month in 2010 to 215 in February of 2015. Over half of these 215 liquid nicotine poisoning calls involve children ages 5 and younger.

North Dakotans have taken action to protect our young people from the harms of e-cigarettes. A new law taking effect August 1 prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes to minors and requires childproof packaging for liquid nicotine containers. You can find out more about the new law at our website. We’re working to keep kids tobacco-free and nicotine-free through the crucial adolescent and teen years and for life.

BreatheND is the official website and logo of the North Dakota Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control Policy, a division of the Tobacco Prevention and Control Executive Committee. North Dakota voters passed a statewide initiated measure that created the Tobacco Prevention and Control Executive Committee and requires a portion of the money North Dakota receives from tobacco settlement dollars to be used for tobacco prevention and control programs. The Center, along with the North Dakota Department of Health, local public health units and other partners, is charged with implementing North Dakota’s comprehensive state tobacco prevention plan: Saving Lives – Saving Money.
