Dangers of Secondhand Smoke
Tobacco's Toll in North Dakota

Toll in Lives

Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death and disability in North Dakota. Each year, 910 North Dakota adults die prematurely due to the effects of smoking.

Toll in Dollars

Cigarette taxes bring in $22,000,000 in revenue every year in North Dakota, but the costs of smoking are far higher. The state pays out $437,000,000 annually in medical costs and lost productivity expenses related to smoking. Each year, smoking costs $687 for every person in North Dakota.

Smoke-Free policies in North Dakota

Fargo is the first city to implement a comprehensive smoke-free policy in North Dakota. A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of this policy at eliminating tobacco-related air pollution in Fargo bars. The results:
  • Before the smoke-free law air pollution in Fargo bars was 4.5 times higher than the EPA limit.
  • After the ordinance, pollution levels declined 98%.
  • Current air pollution levels are similar to those found in outdoor air.

More work is still needed in the state to fully protect citizens from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
  • North Dakota's current tobacco report card holds an F in both control spending and cigarette tax; a C in smokefree air and a B in cessation coverage.
  • Although North Dakota voters are recognized for their effort to increase funding of a state tobacco control program, the program must first become active and be well-funded to raise our grade.
  • The Center for Disease Control recommends the funding level for tobacco control programs reach $9,300,000.
